Adios, Google Video
Google announced today that they will soon not be accepting new uploads for their Google Video site. Kind of a bummer, but I totally undertand why.
I liked Google Video as a platform because you could put up videos of any duration. YouTube’s 10 minute limit made it hard to post things like lectures or longer interview pieces.
Since they paid a ton of money for YouTube, it makes sense that they’d want to focus on that since it has the users Google’s Video site never had (gosh, remember when they tried to sell videos early on?) While far from perfect, YouTube has become the de facto platform for watching video on the web. Over the last few months, Google Video has turned less into a video platform and more into a meta-search tool for finding videos at a variety of sites, including YouTube.
If you have videos on Google Video, as my institution does, fear not, the videos will remain available for users to watch and for you to embed on your site.

Mike,
The only thing I ever posted to Google Video was hour long webcam lectures. Where is a good alternative to post those in the future? Any suggestions?
We’ve started putting some longer stuff on Vimeo. With some video encoding tools, you can specify a max file size, and I set it to be under their total video upload size. Vimeo works more on a file size limit then a time limit. Of course, you lose the HD-ness, as an hour of HD footage usually won’t fit in 2gb.
Our college is planning to use ITunesU for all long lectures and YouTube all the shorter informal video.
