Please vote for me in the EduStyle Awards!

Believe me when I say I’m honored to be one of the three nominees in the CollegeWebEditor.com Best Higher Ed Blog as part of this year’s EduStyle Awards, which is celebrating it’s third year this year. It’s very nice to be recognized by my peers around the world and I’m certainly in some good company with my friends at .eduGuru and Tony Dunn’s blog.

The 2010 eduStyle Awards will be announced in person at the eduWeb Conference in Chicago on July 27, 2010 and today I’m asking for your help. If you have a second today, would you mind going over to EduStyle and voting for this blog? I work hard to present great content on a regular basis – posts that talk about social media (on a technical level), the cloud, WordPress, security and much more.

In the last year, this site has had 102,000+ visitors from 176 countries and territories around the world, including 4 visitors from the Isle of Man and 1 from Kyrgyzstan. It’s been cool to talk with people around the world here and share insights and viewpoints on web development.

So, thanks in advance for voting for me. I appreciate it.

I’ve stayed at a couple of lesser chains and their internet access has been great.

I was bummed to see that internet access at the EduWeb hotel is $12.95 a day. It looks like there will be a connection in the session areas, but at the end of a long day of sessions and networking, it’s nice to come back and veg out for awhile, but I don’t think I’ll (or my instution) will pay $40 for me to surf the web and watch YouTube. If you are paying, enjoy the fast speeds. I remember the terrible internet speeds at HighEdWebTech in November when we all tried to get on that system.

But this morning, there’s a sliver of hope. AT&T has announced free Wi-Fi access to iPhone customers in their network of over 17,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, including Starbucks. One of the other locations listed is the Trump Marina hotel, site of this year’s EduWeb 2008 conference.

I tried to confirm this with AT&T, but I got a clueless rep on the phone. If you go by the website says, you should be able to get on the network with your iPhone.

The People’s Choice voting is now open as part of the first EduStyle Awards.

There are lots of interesting sites from lots of different kinds of schools. I was a little surprised there weren’t more nominees from smaller schools like mine – perhaps they just didn’t make the cut.

Just last week, I was writing about our online tour, and on Friday I found out it has made the shortlist in the Best Online Tour and/or Map category. I’m flattered and honored. We’re up against Boston University and Michigan State University, both of whom use Google Maps for their campus map. We’re a bit different since we’re a tour, but that’s okay. All three entries are pretty interesting to play with.

If you like our tour, I hope you’ll vote for it.

After having such a good time at HighEdWebDev ’07 presenting about the Facebook platform, my colleague Josh Tysiachney and I are packing up the show and bringing it to eduWeb in July. I’ve never been to eduWEB, and now that the schedule has been posted, it looks like a great conference. I’m glad to see some technical sessions there.

Josh and I will be presenting a session called “Head in the Cloud: On-Demand Solultions for Processing, Storage and Content Delivery Needs” on Tuesday, July 22 at 9:45 am. In this session, we’ll explore the possibilities for IHE’s when it comes to content delivery, off-site processing and more. Here’s a quick snippet:

On-demand services like cloud computing, storage, and content delivery have become near commodities in their pricing and scalability, and implementing them may be easier than you think. It’s a win for you, it’s a win for your institution, and it can take a significant load off of your already stressed IT resources.

We’ve been using the “cloud” at Allegheny College for nearly a year. This presentation will showcase our implementation of this exciting technology, focusing especially on Amazon’s Web Services offerings.

We hope to see you there – stay tuned here for more information about the session as we work on the presentation.

I’d like to tape some video interviews with some great higher ed web people about stuff you’re doing and get your takes on technology. Brad? Matt? Kyle? Karine?
